The calculator shows the taxation applied to an advertised annual salary from 2000/01 to 2025/26. Salary figures for each year are adjusted using the Consumer Prices Index (CPI) to reflect the amount required to maintain constant purchasing power; for example, £1.90 in 2025 has the same purchasing power as £1.00 in 2000.
Two key metrics are reported. Government cost per £1 of take-home pay shows how much the government collects in mandatory charges for each £1 received by the employee. Total deductions (%) shows the share of the employer’s total employment cost paid to the government rather than received by the employee.
The accompanying graph presents effective taxation on selected salaries over time, with all salaries expressed in real terms. A value of 0.5 indicates that for every £1 of take-home pay, the government collects an additional 50p; a value of 1.0 indicates parity between take-home pay and mandatory charges.
Private pension contributions, both employee and employer, are excluded.
